The remarkable Tyup Pompey enhanced his reputation as a Ludlow Legend with a second straight success — and he will be back next month chasing a first ever hat-trick.
It was his fifth course win in 34 visits.
If it's a Thursday at Ludlow then the old master will be at the Shropshire track and he will return, to the delight of his army of fans, on Ladies Night on May 12 to attempt to win the race he won last year at the same meeting.
Owner-trainer Ann Price, from just over the Powys border near Knighton, said: "There will never be another like him.
"If the horsebox broke down on the way here, he knows enough of the way to walk it.
"It's the trainer who doesn't like travelling, not the horse, so as long as I can find races for him here and at Hereford, why go further?"
And regular jockey, three pound claimer Lee Stephens, added: "It's just fantastic to be associated with a horse like him. Ludlow is very much a family orientated course and he is very much one of that family now."
Going off the 2-1 favourite, Tyup Pompey made a mistake on the first circuit of yesterday's 2m 4f Bromfield Sand & Gravel Handicap Chase.
But the 10-year-old had plenty of chance to recover and, by the time they turned for home, he was cantering all over the opposition — despite a seven pound penalty.
He went for the line at the top of the home straight and galloped eight lengths clear of The Snail to win.
l The warm sunshine saw the attendance figure increase from 12 months ago by 300 to 1,750 and the Ludlow Race Club were able to hand over a cheque for £7,500 to the League Of Friends of the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
