New Powys Senedd Member initially apprehensive at local event after Ann Widdecombe killing

What a difference a few months make!

Now, not only can I now find my way around the Welsh Parliament buildings, I also understand the procedures and processes that a MS has to follow, it’s been a very exciting time.

My first question in the Chamber was, to say the least, nerve wracking but now I actually enjoy asking questions.

It enables us as the opposition party to hold the Government to account but also work with them on matters that are important to the people of Wales.

The exciting news is that we are in the final stages of opening of my constituency office and the details of which will be released soon.

Of course it isn’t all good news. The extremely sad news about the brutal slaying of Ann Widdecombe in her own home was met by all Members across the Political spectrum with obvious sadness but also with a huge sense of incredibility.

The sudden realisation that we are all potential targets of people who feel that political disagreement enables them to commit physical violence was brought home with a bang. And of course, security has been raised as a result.

After many emails from security, as you can imagine, when I attended the Royal Welsh Show I was initially slightly apprehensive.

However, I was delighted to meet so many lovely people, a reminder that the majority of us just want a happy and rewarding life and that it’s an honour to represent them and work to give them just that.

Member of the Senedd for Gwynedd Maldwyn, Claire Johnson-Wood
