Step back to 1962 and see Shropshire as it looked more than 60 years ago.
From quiet village streets and country lanes to busy town centres, schools, railway stations and workplaces, these photographs capture familiar places at a time when the county was beginning to change.
For some, they will bring back memories of childhood, old shops and places that have long since vanished; for others, they offer a glimpse of a Shropshire they never knew.

9. Looking up Paradise
A steep climb up Paradise in Coalbrookdale is captured in this photograph from 1962. The winding road, lined with cottages, offers a glimpse of a corner of Shropshire that generations of local people would have known well. Looking at the scene today, how much do you think has changed? Do you remember walking or cycling up Paradise, or recognise any of the buildings? | Shropshire Star archive

10. RAF recruits on parade at Bridgnorth
RAF recruits of 5 Flight, Intake No. 43, are pictured on parade at RAF Bridgnorth at Stanmore on December 11, 1962, as they began eight weeks of training. Corporal W. Swan is seen checking the turnout of the young recruits in their uniforms. This was the final intake at the recruit training school before the station closed. The photograph was later reprinted in 1973. Do you remember RAF Bridgnorth at Stanmore, or know anyone who trained there? | Shropshire Star archive

11. A summer afternoon by the River Severn
Children paddle in the River Severn beneath the bridge at Bridgnorth on June 22, 1962, making the most of a summer day. With the river providing a natural playground, it's a lovely glimpse of childhood more than 60 years ago. Do you remember paddling in the Severn? Where did you go for a dip or a paddle during the summer holidays? | Shropshire Star archive

12. A lost corner of Malinslee
Malinslee Chapel is pictured on August 15, 1962, tucked among the trees with the ruins of the old abbey in the foreground. Standing in the picture is the late Shropshire Star journalist Shirley Tart, who was a young girl at the time. Local legend claimed a secret passage once connected the chapel and Malinslee Hall — could this quiet scene have inspired such stories? Both the chapel and hall disappeared during the development of Telford shopping centre, although the chapel was carefully dismantled stone by stone and later rebuilt at Telford Town Park. Do you remember Malinslee as it looked before Telford was built? | Shropshire Star archive
