'This is a setback' - Canal trust issues update on repairs to Whitchurch major embankment breach

The Llangollen Canal was the scene of a major incident in December.

A canal trust has described it as a “setback” that problems have been found during repairs of the Llangollen Canal that will see part of the waterway forced to close.

The Whitchurch Waterway Trust say they have been told by the Canal and River Trust (CRT) that part of the canal will have to close while the latest problems are rectified.

The Llangollen Canal was the scene of a major incident in December when an embankment breach saw more than 15 million litres of water cascade into a nearby field, leaving a number of canal boats stranded.

Now the Whitchurch Waterway Trust (WWT) that looks after the canal said the CRT has been investigating a wet patch within the substantial ground works to repair the Llangollen Canal.

They said the source is thought to be a leak from the canal to the south of the works, which means that part of the canal will have to be temporarily closed off.

In an update on social media the trust said: “In order to locate and repair the leak, CRT will temporarily close off The Whitchurch Arm with the agreement and support of The Whitchurch Waterway Trust (WWT).

“WWT has contacted all the boats moored on the Arm to explain the situation.

“Their owners were given the choice either to stay where they are or to leave The Arm and move to moorings on the Llangollen Canal.

“CRT has advised that the problem could be resolved within weeks or could extend to several months, depending on what they find. The operation to seal off The Whitchurch Arm will begin on Monday, September 14.

“The majority of boat owners have made their decision with most opting to remain on The Arm. WWT is working with CRT to ensure that boat owners are supported during this period, including the provision of fresh water.”

Mark Lacey, Chair of WWT added: “Coming so soon after our hugely successful Canal Festival, this is a setback, but we understand that renovating a 200-year old structure built with pick and shovel will throw up obstacles along the way.

“We have an excellent relationship with the CRT project team and we will work with them to ensure the best possible outcomes for everyone who enjoys The Whitchurch Arm.”
