A Shropshire primary school is celebrating after being handed a glowing Ofsted report that praised the school’s curriculum, standard of teaching, as well as the children’s behaviour and attendance.

Voluntary academy St Peter and St Paul Catholic Primary School in Coppice Drive, Newport, near Telford was visited by inspectors from the education watchdog in April.

Inspectors rated the school as a “strong standard” in nearly all areas.

The report cited the school’s “purposeful curriculum and excellent attention to pupils’ personal development”.

Inspectors said: “Pupils achieve very well at this school. In reading and mathematics, pupils make excellent progress from their starting points and achieve highly. This is also the case for disadvantaged pupils and pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

“Achievement in writing compares favourably with national averages. The quality of current pupils’ writing is positive and pupils make sustained improvements over time. Pupils achieve well across the wider curriculum.”

The inspectors added: “The school's positive picture for attendance is mirrored in pupils’ orderly behaviour and thoughtful demeanour in school. In lessons, pupils are attentive and responsive to staff.

“They work hard and want to do well. They support one another and show mature attitudes to teamwork, collaboration and effort.”

Headteacher, Sarah Staniforth, said she was delighted with the report.

She said: “We are absolutely delighted that the report recognises the hard work, dedication and care shown by our staff, pupils and families every day. It reflects the strong sense of community and high expectations we strive for at St Peter and St Paul.

“This report celebrates the strength of our curriculum and the ambition we have for every child to achieve their very best. We are particularly proud of how our pupils develop confidence, curiosity and a love of learning.

“This outcome is a testament to our committed staff team, whose passion and professionalism ensure that all our pupils are supported to flourish academically and personally.

“Our pupils are a credit to the school. Their positive attitudes, kindness and respect for others were rightly recognised, and we are incredibly proud of them.

“Our Catholic ethos is at the heart of everything we do, and we are pleased that the report recognises the caring, respectful and inclusive environment we have built together; living our mission of ‘letting our light shine’ every day.”
