The visit, on Thursday (November 5) brought together veterans, their families and young people from the Dawley Bank Detachment, Shropshire Army Cadet Force, 2379 (Dawley) Squadron, and Royal Air Force Air Cadets to recognise the importance of remembering those who have served, while celebrating the stories and experiences of those who continue to give to their communities.

During the trip the veterans had the opportunity to meet with Veterans Minister Calvin Bailey MBE MP, and cadets had the opportunity to visit Number 10 Downing Street.

With remembrance weekend approaching the visit provided an opportunity to bring the Telford community to parliament, recognise the contribution of local veterans and ensure their voices and experiences were heard.

For many veterans, their service has shaped their lives and the lives of their families, and the visit also recognised the often-unseen sacrifices made by those who support serving personnel and veterans throughout their lives.

Speaking following the visit Mr Davies said: “It was the greatest privilege to welcome more than 50 veterans, family members and cadets from across Telford to parliament today.

“I have always been passionate about giving people from Telford the opportunity to experience parliament for themselves, and bringing everyone together ahead of remembrance weekend made this visit particularly special.

“Remembrance means so much to our community, and it was important to me that those who have served our country, alongside the families who have stood by them, were recognised in the heart of our democracy.

“From planting poppy stakes in parliament’s memorial gardens to handing over the wreaths that will be laid at services back home in Telford, the day was full of moments that connected our national remembrance with the community we are so proud to represent.

“Our veterans have given so much in service to our country. Their dedication, commitment and sacrifice should never be taken for granted. They deserve to know that their service is valued and, just as importantly, that support is there when they need it and I am particularly proud to support veterans who have reached out to me for help and support. Their service is something we must recognise and act upon throughout the year.”

Katrina mason from Lightmoor who was part of the visit, said: “Having grown up in a military family, it’s all I’ve ever known, so when this opportunity came up, I knew I wanted to experience parliament.

“Having watched moments on TV, it was great to be there in person and experience it. With it also being remembrance weekend, it made the experience even more special, reflecting on the history of our country. I would highly recommend getting in touch with Shaun. An experience well worth visiting.”
