'Kind and caring' south Shropshire residential home rated 'good' in CQC inspection

A residential home in Bishop’s Castle has been praised by the Care Quality Commission for their person-centred care.

High Trees Residential Home in Bishop’s Castle has been rated 'good' following its latest inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), with inspectors praising a strong person-centred culture, caring staff and effective leadership.

The residential home was visited by the CQC in September this year.

High Trees, which provides care for up to 16 older people, younger adults, and people with a learning disability or autism, was home to 14 residents at the time of the inspection.

The report also highlighted strong practices around consent and decision-making.

Inspectors said that staff ensured people understood their care and support so they could give informed consent, and where individuals lacked mental capacity, decisions were made in their best interests with involvement from those important to them.

Leadership and culture were identified as strengths. Managers and staff shared a clear vision based on listening, learning, and trust.

The registered manager was described as knowledgeable and supportive, treating staff fairly and valuing their wellbeing.

Staff reported feeling able to raise concerns and provide feedback, and inspectors found that incidents were investigated thoroughly, contributing to a positive learning culture.

Inspectors observing kindness, compassion and respect throughout the service, with residents described as comfortable and relaxed with staff, and relatives spoke positively about their experiences.

The inspection report stated: "People were positive about the quality of the care and support provided at the care home.

"People told us they felt safe living there and liked the staff who supported them. One person said: 'The home is a very important part of my life.'

"People received person-centred care, and their choices were listened to and respected. A family member told us: 'Their choices are listened to, respected, noted and facilitated whenever possible.'"
