Shropshire weather: Met Office forecast for Telford, Shrewsbury and more as heat health alert issued

Another UKHSA heat health alert has been issued for the West Midlands as high temperatures are forecast to continue in the region.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a new heat health alert for the West Midlands, with high temperatures forecast to continue in Shropshire.

On Wednesday (July 29), the West Midlands was declared in drought by the Environment Agency.

Mark Sidaway, deputy chief forecaster, said: “The forecast is showing potential for more rain than much of the UK has experienced over the last few weeks.

“However, it looks as though amounts of rain for many will be fairly modest, and won't balance out the shortfall that we have recorded this summer. It’s still possible that some areas of the south will miss out and see little or no rainfall.”

The yellow heat health alert will come into force in the West Midlands at 9am on Sunday (August 2) and end at 9am on Wednesday (August 5).

The alert reads: “Minor impacts are likely across health and social care services, including: increased use of healthcare services by vulnerable people, greater risk to life of vulnerable people, increased potential for indoor environments to become very warm. Water‑related incidents may increase, including risks from cold‑water shock and drowning.”

Who UKHSA heat health alerts are aimed at

The heat health alert service, which forewarns of periods of high temperatures which may affect the health of the public, is aimed at health and social care professionals and anyone with a role in reducing the harm extended periods of hot weather can have on health.

Water safety

Samantha Hughes, national water safety partner at the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, said: “With warmer weather approaching, it’s important to remember that the water is still cold. Entering it unexpectedly can lead to cold water shock, causing a sudden increase in breathing and heart rate, which may trigger panic.

“If you find yourself struggling in the water, remember to Float to Live: tilt your head back so your ears are submerged, relax and control your breathing. You may need to gently use your hands to help you stay afloat, and it’s okay if your legs sink - everyone floats differently.

“Where possible, always choose a lifeguarded beach, and swim between the red and yellow flags. In a coastal emergency remember to call 999 for the coastguard.”
