Shrewsbury Town players – led by captain Ian Sharps – have thrown their support behind a new campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of bowel cancer.

The central defender and skipper showed his support for the Football League Trust campaign by wearing a T-shirt in support of the initiative before his side's Easter Monday clash against Bradford City.

The 'Know the Score' awareness campaign is set to run throughout April. Among those participating are England and Manchester City midfielder James Milner, 1966 World Cup winner Martin Peters, former Tottenham Hotspur striker Les Ferdinand and England women's captain Faye White.

Martin James, Shrewsbury Town's community development manager, said: "It's very important that we support such a worthy cause."

The campaign is also being backed by leading bowel cancer charities, including the Bobby Moore Fund, the Adam Stansfield Foundation, Beating Bowel Cancer, Bowel Cancer UK, the Men's Health Forum and the founding charity of 'Know the Score', the Mr Brightside Project.

The campaign is also being supported by the League Managers Association and Professional Game Match Officials Limited.
