Shrewsbury Nepalese restaurants holding charity dinner nights for flood victims

The fundraiser comes after the devastating disaster struck Nepal.

Two Nepalese restaurants in Shrewsbury will be holding charity dinner nights to raise funds for those affected by the shocking flooding of last month.

Images of the devastating floods which hit Nepal were met with horror across the world.

It is believed that more than 1,000 people were killed, and another 4,000 remain missing.

The owners of Shrewsbury's Avatar Restaurant on Mardol and Yak and Yeti in Frankwell are now hosting a series of charity dinners in an effort to support those affected.

Both restaurants specialise in Nepalese cuisine.

Robin Sharma, who runs the restaurants alongside Pema Tseten and Susant Khatri, said they had all been shocked by the scale of the disaster which struck Nepal.

Mr Sharma said: “We are all Nepalese, myself and the staff.

“Thousands and thousands of people’s homes and livelihood have been wiped away by the flood and for a lot of people we don’t know even where they are. The government does not know how many people have died or been taken away.”

Mr Sharma said the disaster was something he would never have imagined, and added: “to be honest for a couple of days I have not looked at what has happened because I cannot, I don’t want to see that.”

Now the restaurants will be holding four charity evenings where customers pay for their meals as normal, but the restaurant donates the proceeds to the appeal.

The evenings will take place at Avatar on September 7 and 21, and at Yak & Yeti on September 14 and 28.

Mr Sharma said: “We want to do what we can to support people so what we are doing is we are not charging customers any extra, we are just inviting customers to support on that day, come and have a meal - we are not charging any extra but whatever sales we make from meals we want to give to charity.”

He added: “We warmly invite our customers, friends, families and the wider Shrewsbury community to come together, enjoy a delicious Nepalese meal and help us make a meaningful difference.

“Every meal purchased can help.

“Every contribution matters.

“Together, we can show the people of Nepal that they are not alone.”
