Police issue update after car crash into building caused fractured gas pipe in Telford

The incident occurred late on Friday night (October 30)

Police have issued an update after emergency services and gas engineers were called in Telford following a car hitting a building and fracturing a gas pipe.

A West Mercia Police spokesman said on Monday (November 2) that there were “no injuries to report” after the car crash, which occurred on Stafford Park late on Friday night (October 30).

The spokesman said: “We received a call around 11.10pm on Friday evening (30 October) with a report of a car colliding with a building on Stafford Park in Telford. Thankfully, no injuries to report.”

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service scrambled two crews to the scene alongside gas engineers from the utilities firm Cadent.

The fire service said the area was cordoned off but that firefighters were unable to work on the car involved due to the risk from the gas leak.

They had to leave the situation in the hands of the engineers to resolve the leak.

A spokesman for Cadent said the firm had responded to the incident, but that further work to fix the pipe was necessary.

Cadent has been contacted again for an update on the status of the work.

The Cadent spokesperson said over the weekend: “We were called out last night to support the emergency service response to an incident involving third-party damage to a gas ‘service’ pipe.

“The service pipe is the pipe which carries gas into a building from the bigger main pipe in the road.

“Our priority in an incident like this is to make sure everything associated with gas is made safe, which we were able to do by isolating gas supply to this damaged pipe.

“Our teams have further work to do, to replace the damaged pipe, which we will complete as soon as possible.

“Incidents like these are a reminder of the importance to act immediately if you smell gas or notice damage to gas pipes. Call the national gas emergency service on 0800 111 999, day or night. We strongly advise saving the number into your phone, so it’s there if you should ever need it.”
