Owner Clair Sutton said Taffy had been sniffing around the garden when he got his head stuck at about 6.40pm.

She said: "I had let the dog out and he was sniffing around and stuck his head through the wall and couldn't get it out.

"We tried everything and his head wouldn't come out. We had to be really careful because there was a spike by his throat.

"I didn't know how he could get his head stuck and not get it out again."

Mother of two Miss Sutton said it was the first time Taffy had got his head stuck in the few weeks she has had him.

Firefighters were called to the scene to help free the young dog from the wall in the front garden of the home.

Leading firefighter Steven Cox said: "We used a bolster chisel to chip away carefully at the brickwork until there was enough room for it to get its head out."

The dog was released uninjured within about 10 minutes of the arrival of firefighters.

Miss Sutton said something to keep Taffy away from the wall may be needed.

She said: "He's been out in the garden since and went straight for the wall."
