£244,950 investment to help Powys prepare for the 2027 Grand Départ
Powys is gearing up for the Tour de France Grand Départ 2027 with £244,950 in Welsh Government investment to boost cycling tourism, attract visitors and support local economies.
The funding will support cycling hub projects in key cycling destinations across Powys with £100,000 allocated to the North Powys Cycle Hubs Project, £100,000 to the South Powys Cycle Hubs Project and £44,950 to the Welshpool Cycle Hub project.
The Powys Cycle Hub projects will provide cycle parking, repair stations, bike-wash facilities, e-bike charging, route improvements, signage and visitor information. The hubs will help cyclists discover nearby attractions, including Powis Castle and the National Cycle Museum, while encouraging visitors to explore and spend in local communities.
Councillor Glyn Preston, Cabinet Member for a More Prosperous Powys, said: “It’s fantastic to hear about this investment being made in Powys. Having our beautiful landscapes and towns showcased on a global stage is already a wonderful opportunity, and this additional support will help us make sure the benefits of the Tour are felt long after the race.
We are already working on how we can support local businesses and communities to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime event, and this investment will help us build on those preparations.”
The Powys projects form part of a £4.5 million Welsh Government investment in cycling tourism across Wales ahead of the Grand Départ. The investment includes £3.19 million for 54 projects across Wales.
The investment comes as Wales prepares to take centre stage for the Tour de France Grand Départ 2027, with Stage 4 starting in Welshpool and travelling through Powys towards Cardiff.
