Powys pupils’ Happiness in Nature’ photographs wow competition judge

Builth Wells Rotary Club recently organised the local heats of the Rotary Young Photographer Competition 2026.

This was held at Ysgol Calon Cymru High School, on the Llandrindod Wells Campus.

The aim of the competition is to challenge the pupils to produce an image inspired by a theme.

The theme this year was ’Happiness in Nature’ - this gave lots scope for their own interpretation.

Each entrant was asked to provide a brief sentence explaining what the photograph represents and their inspiration behind the image.

The students from Year 8, 10 and 12 were presented with their certificates by Builth Wells Rotary President, Hugh Garner.

Year 10 winner, Phoebe Spencer-Green, presented a portrait of a goat, and Year 8 winner, Sofia Toma, chose an image of a dog sitting in a sink planter, looking for mice.

Sofia was surprised to discover her entry had also won the District Level Competition and will be entered for the Regional Final, which is held at the Senedd.

The Club welcomed the services of Bob Walls, who was judging the competition.

Bob is Chairperson of Builth Wells Photographic Club, where he and fellow members, are keen to encourage novice photographers to develop their skills.
