Police issue key safety advice to Harper Adams students

A new university year has begun - police have some advice

West Mercia Police has welcomed students at Harper Adams University back for another academic year - officers have issued advice about how students can stay safe.

Officers from the Newport Safer Neighbourhood team have been encouraging students of all ages at the specialist agricultural university to use all the support and advice on offer to keep them from harm's way.

The police have issued several key pieces of advice to keep students safe this academic year.

These include students making sure their accommodation is secure, keeping valuables out of sight, planning journeys home from nights out and remaining aware of their surroundings when socialising.

Sergeant Sean Maddocks said: "Starting university is an exciting time and we would like to welcome all students joining Harper Adams University this year, as well as those returning to continue their studies.

"We know that moving away from home, meeting new people and living independently can bring new experiences and challenges.”

He went on to say: “Our message to students is simple: enjoy your time at university but remember to take steps to keep yourself, your friends and your belongings safe.

"We are committed to working closely with the university and the Students' Union to ensure students feel supported and know where to turn if they need help or advice."

Walksafe, an app that provides users with a list of safety-trained venues, including bars, restaurants and other premises, is also available for students at Harper.

The app has a number of safety features, including an SOS alert button.

The police also said that officers will be attending several important events at the university throughout the year, giving students the opportunity to raise any concerns they may have.

Officers will also be appearing at the Student Union's Freshers’ Fair between 10am and 3pm on Friday, September 26.

Sgt Maddocks said: “Our neighbourhood policing teams will be visible around the university and local community throughout the year.

“We want students to feel confident approaching us with any concerns, no matter how small they may seem.

"By working together and looking out for one another, we can help ensure Harper Adams remains a safe and welcoming place to live, study and socialise."

Students should always call 999 in an emergency, police have said.
