Plans to 'rejuvenate' an 'ageing' Telford office building approved ahead of HMRC move
Plans to modernise an office building in central Telford have been approved as HM Revenue and Customs prepares to move in.
Plans to modernise Parkside Court on Hall Park Way have been approved by Telford & Wrekin Council planning officers.
Last summer, it was revealed that HMRC would be joining other government departments, including HM Land Registry and Natural England, at the site in Telford town centre.
The organisation said the move from its existing base at Telford Plaza on Ironmasters Way would safeguard more than 1,000 jobs in the town.
At the time, Daljit Rehal, HMRC’s chief digital and information officer, said: “HMRC has had a significant presence in Telford for many years.
"This announcement demonstrates our continued commitment to the town. The move will secure around 1,100 HMRC jobs in Telford, providing long-term opportunities and career paths.”
In October plans to modernise the early 1990s building were submitted to Telford & Wrekin Council.
The application stated that the development was “required to meet HMRC’s occupation requirements” and included various building and landscaping works.
As part of the HMRC fit-out, the facility will include bike storage and a bike repair shop while a new gym and shower facilities will be built.
The proposal also includes the replacement of all glazing and doors, the enhancement of landscaping and parking areas and the redesigning of office spaces.
Approving the plans, Telford & Wrekin Council planning officers determined the development would breathe new life into the office block.
The decision notice reads: "The applicant building has various aspects that are deemed to be ageing; dating from the initial construction of the building. The exterior faces of the building have suffered from time and weathering.
"As such, officers find the overall proposal to be a beneficial rejuvenation of the property and local area and in principle, all aspects of the proposal aesthetically, environmentally, and access wise are considered beneficial."
