Plans for recycling machines at Oswestry Aldi submitted - among this week's applications

Aldi wants to have recycling machines installed at its two Oswestry supermarkets.

In January 2025, the Government announced the introduction of a deposit return scheme to improve the amount of amount of recycling for drink containers that are between 150ml and 3l.

The initiative, which will go live from October 2027, will require all retailers who sell drinks in plastic bottles and steel/aluminium cans to apply a surcharge of 20p, which is refunded when the empty container is returned.

Some retailers who sell such products will be excluded, however the exemption will not apply to Aldi given the physical size of its stores.

The firm is therefore proposing to install Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) at its Oswestry supermarkets in Shrewsbury Road and Oswald Road respectively.

The units scan returned containers and issue vouchers that may be redeemed in store, exchanged for cash, or donated directly on the RVM to charity. In the case of Aldi, this will be the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Documents submitted to Shropshire Council say that there is expected to be an average of around 38,000 returns per store per week.

A heritage statement reads: "The proposed units have been specifically designed to provide a functional, durable and high-quality facility that integrates appropriately within the operational Aldi store environment whilstdelivering the infrastructure necessary to support the Deposit Return Scheme.

"The scale, design and appearance of the units are considered proportionate to their intended use and appropriate within the context of a modern retail setting."
