Spotlight will fall on green

The future of a five-acre piece of land in Oswestry town centre will be spelled out to councillors tonight.

The future of a five-acre piece of land in Oswestry town centre will be spelled out to councillors tonight.

The £600,000 site off Gobowen Road was bought by Advantage West Midlands and earmarked for a health centre. But that plan was scuppered when county councillors agreed to the land being registered as a town green after a campaign and two planning inspector-helmed public inquiries.

The centre is now being developed at the Cambrian Railway Works building.

In November, town councillors described the registration of the site as a tragedy. Members feared it would be blighted by dog mess and drug-taking.

Councillors asked the county council to clarify who would maintain the site and asked for reassurances such costs would not come from the public purse. They also asked what can be done with the site in development, open space and planting terms and who the ultimate owners of the land will be.

The council's response will be given at the development and planning committee meeting at The Guildhall tonight, starting at 7pm.
