A soldier who trained in Shropshire before deploying to Afghanistan broke a woman's leg during a row at a party, a court has heard

Staff Sergeant Alan Cree, 37, had just returned to his home at Tern Hill barracks near Market Drayton when the alleged incident occurred at a party.

Cree, known as Pablo, went to the party with his wife, Moire, 50, where it is alleged he got into an argument with her and punched her in the face.

He denied the charge of grievous bodily harm at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday.

Mrs Cree's friend, Serena Campbell, who also has a serving husband and was hosting the party in the barracks, stepped in to break the couple up when she alleges Cree stamped on her leg, breaking it just above her ankle.

Mrs Cree told jurors her husband accidentally landed on Mrs Campbell's leg during a scuffle and denied he hit her in the eye.

Cree, who now lives in Warminster, Wiltshire, told the court that despite not drinking heavily on the night, he had no recollection of the alleged assault on Mrs Campbell.

He said: "I think a combination of not drinking in the past (while on tour), the alcohol definitely had an effect on me. I have no recollection."

He added the first he learned of the alleged assault was when his wife told him the following morning. The trial continues.
