New discount clothing store opens in Newport

The owner of a new shop in Newport has spoken about why he is on a mission to save the country's high streets.

For many years, the Catalogue Surplus Centre on St Mary's Street in Newport offered clothing and footwear for discount prices.

The community was shocked when the popular store went up for sale and closed earlier this year.

But this week has seen the opening of a new clothing surplus store, Hanger, under the management of 36-year-old Jess Bhandal from Wolverhampton.

Jess, whose father worked on markets, said his family have long been passionate about preserving the local high street.

"We've always been in the community in terms of retail, we've had various businesses from convenience stores to take-outs.

"But there's a passion that we genuinely have for not losing high streets, we're not fans of these American styles out-of-town pop-up shopping centres."

Jess said the family wanted to honour the original store and continue providing Newport with surplus, discount clothing.

"We absolutely love Newport," Jess said. "The last store was a little outdated and was looking a little tired. We've brought in a lot of updated stock which is more in line with current trends.

"The fit of the store is nice and clean, it's got that cool warehouse, mini TK Maxx style feel. We want to bring in the latest trends and fashion, branded, but at affordable prices."
