MP calls summit in Newport on dealing with dementia

Experts from across the county will be asked to share ideas on helping dementia patients

Experts from across Shropshire will attend a summit in Newport to look at how best to deal with dementia and frailty among the elderly.

The event, which has been organised by Wrekin MP Mark Pritchard, will be attended by representatives of the NHS, charities and local government, as well regional experts and people with experience of caring for dementia sufferers.

Mr Pritchard said the event on October 30 would be held in conjunction with Newport Cottage Care Centre Trust, and would look at how organisations could work better together to address the rising number of dementia cases in the county.

It would also look at how support for those living with dementia, and their carers, could be improved.

Mr Pritchard said: “I am grateful to the Newport Cottage Care Centre Trust, Linden Hall Surgery, and other partners for agreeing to work with me to organise Newport’s first ever dementia summit.

“This is a non-political community event designed to bring people together to share their lived experience of dementia either as medical practitioners, local authority experts, carers and families, charity fundraisers and even patients themselves.

“I hope the summit will provide an opportunity to share best practice and understand how local services can be enhanced to support those with dementia and those caring for people with dementia.”
