'It's a fatal accident waiting to happen' - Man living by busy B-road fears the worst and demands action

A man living along a busy stretch of road near Bridgnorth has issued an urgent plea for a speed limit reduction over concerns for his safety.

Chris Flavell says he would have "never" purchased his home off the B4176 in Hilton if he knew what the road was like, claiming it is a fatal accident "waiting to happen".

Since moving into the property last September, the 59-year-old says he has felt his home shake when large vehicles pass at speed and experienced extreme difficulties accessing and exiting his driveway.

In 2016, a safety boss said there would be no speed cameras installed on the busy commuter route - known locally as 'the rabbit run' - which claimed two lives that year. The road is currently a national speed limit area (60mph on single carriageways).

Mr Flavell says he has contacted Shropshire Council calling for action along the stretch of road over concerns for his and his neighbour's safety, and also spoken with South Shropshire MP Stuart Anderson.

However, he claims to have been told that there are limited funds available to address the issue and that the road "did not meet the accident criteria".

The 59-year-old said: "The road is horrendous. When pulling off the drive, because vehicles are coming at such a speed, you literally are a few yards into the road and have someone behind you tooting their horn at you.

"It is extremely difficult pulling on to the driveway. When you have a tanker coming at 70mph, it is absolutely frightening.

"I pulled my car through the gate to close the gate once and a tanker came past so quickly that it blew me backwards, nearly to the ground, and I have logged this in emails to the council. But they don't consider this as dangerous.

"It is a health and safety risk. It is a fatal accident waiting to happen.

"It is a problem for neighbours as well when they are coming out of their properties too. The vehicles come at horrendous speeds, motorbikes use it as a race track.

"A big concern of ours is how close the side of our house is to the road. When the tankers go past as the road dips, it literally shakes the house and you can feel it.

"If I'd have known the traffic was this bad, there is no way I would have purchased the property.

"We really want a speed reduction. I would prefer 30mph by the properties but I don't think that would be viable.

"But at least a 40mph limit to give us a fighting chance of getting off and on the driveway safely."

Mr Flavell said there is a gap of approximately three metres between the edge of the road and his property, and he fears that a vehicle could career into the side of it if a driver was to lose control.

The speed of vehicles along the road is not something he anticipated being an issue when he went to view the house.

"I didn't know it would be this bad," Mr Flavell added. "I travelled this road twice a day to get to work from where I previously lived in Telford, so I was aware of the road.

"But I didn't really experience any traffic like this, maybe I was oblivious to it but I didn't really notice it. But since I have been in the property I have, and it has got much worse.

"When we viewed the house it was just on weekends and wasn't quite as bad, but we have now discovered that it is.

"If anything was to happen to the driver of a vehicle at the wheel then they could take the side of our house out. It is really dangerous.

"In other places near us there have been speed reductions down to 30mph. In Prescott there is also a 40mph speed limit and those houses aren't on the road like ours, and they have speed cameras.

"We can't understand why our health and wellbeing is being placed at risk by this road."

Shropshire Council has been contacted for comment.
