Event being lined up to mark 110th anniversary of Battle of The Somme

The 110th anniversary will be marked with a service from 6.30pm at the war memorial at Russell Square, in Madeley.

A Telford branch of a national armed forces charity is organising an event to mark the 110th anniversary of a brutal First World War battle.

Madeley branch of the Royal British Legion is planning a service at the town’s war memorial to remember the start of the Battle of The Somme on July 1, 1916.

The 110th anniversary will be marked with a service from 6.30pm at the war memorial at Russell Square, in Madeley.

Famously by the end of the first day of the five month battle British forces had suffered 57,470 casualties, with 19,240 of those killed.

It represented the largest losses suffered by the British Army in a single day and by the end of the battle in November 1916 there had been more than a million casualties on both sides.

A meeting of Madeley Town Council earlier this year heard that the branch and the authority have always worked well on local events.
