Builth Wells’ bee garden rejuvenated with new plants and flowers

Builth Wells’ bee garden has been refreshed thanks to some new plants and flowers.

The bee garden, was created by the town council a few years ago as its biodiversity project.

The triangular piece of land by the doctor’s surgery on the Groe was cleared and fenced off and wildflowers were planted to encourage bees.

Trees on the land have remained in place and the council’s aim was to turn a piece of waste land into a garden for the town

Now some new plants and flowers have been added to enhance the garden for the spring and summer.

At a recent Builth Wells Town Council meeting, town clerk Louise Hammond said: “We have spent £229 on new plants and flowers to rejuvenate the bee garden.”

Members were told that there had been a few issues with smells coming from the bin and the plan is to move it but it will have to be relocated carefully because Powys County Council operatives clear it and will need easy access to it.

Mrs Hammond said the volunteers who help to look after the bee garden have asked again if they could have a bench there.

But members said the garden is for wildlife and nature and they do not really want to encourage people to spend time in there.

Mrs Hammond said she had asked the town council’s caretaker to place some logs in there which the volunteers will be able to sit on for a break.

Mrs Hammond came up with the idea for the bee garden because the town council needed to submit a report on its biodiversity actions to the Welsh Government.

The project emerged after The Welsh Government under The Environment (Wales) Act 2016 announced it wants every council to do something to prepare a biodiversity plan and work to enhance biodiversity in its area.
