Driver dies from A438 crash after suffering multiple traumatic injuries, an inquest opening hears

A driver passed away following a two vehicle collision on the A438 between Rhydspence and Clyro on July 30, an inquest has heard.

Mr John Christopher's death was reported by Dyfed Powys Police on July 31.

The 76 year-old had been the driver of a vehicle involved in the two vehicle collision and as a result of his injuries he passed away at the scene, an inquest at Pontypridd Coroner's Court heard today (Friday, August 7)

South Wales Central Area Coroner Rachel Knight was told a post mortem was carried out by Dr Haynes at Prince Charles Hospital on August 5 and he gave a provisional cause of death as motor vehicle collision leading to blunt force trauma leading to multiple traumatic injuries.

Mr Christopher was identified by his family, who said he lived at Wyeside Gardens in Hay on Wye and he was born in Ystradgynlais on August 4 1949.

Ms Knight said there was reason to believe Mr Christopher's death may have been unnatural and so a full inquest would be required. She adjourned the inquest opening and said a date will be fixed in the future and all family and interested parties will be made aware of it.

She expressed her condolences to the family and friends of Mr Christopher.

The collision took place at around 3pm on Thursday, July 30.

Police officers, fire service and ambulances were called to the scene as the road was closed.

Mr Christopher died at the scene and the other driver was air lifted to hospital. They have since been discharged.

After the recovery of the vehicles, the road was reopened at around 1.30am on Friday, July 31.
