Councillor and Scouts launch seasonal solution to Newport’s postal problems

The Scouts charity postal service will operate on three days in the run up to the festive period.

Scouts in the Newport area will be helping ensure that local people receive their Christmas cards after a councillor relaunched a charity scheme.

The Scouts charity postal service will operate on three days in the run up to the festive period with the 40p stamps providing much needed funds for the youth organisation and Cottage Care.

“Problems are continuing with the Royal Mail,” said Councillor Peter Scott.

“I have been receiving one delivery a week.”

Councillor Scott was inspired by a comment about posting Christmas cards now to recall a charity scheme from a while ago where the Scouts used to deliver Christmas cards around the town.

“The scouts were very receptive to the idea.”

They have come up with the scheme tag line Community and Charity Hand in Hand.

The 1st Newport and 2nd Church Aston Scouts’ groups in Newport and Church Aston will be available on three mornings in the run up to Christmas Day.

The first date is Saturday, November 28, when Newport is holding its Christmas lights switch on. The second and third dates will be December 5 and 12 and it is a cash only service.

“People will be able to find us on The Square between 11am and 2pm, or in the library if the weather is against us.”

Councillor Scott added: “Unlike the Royal Mail we will be able to guarantee next day delivery for 40p, which is much less than the price of a stamp.”

And the independent councillor added: “If people struggle to make it, I can come round and pick up the cards.”

He added that all the necessary safeguarding issues have been sorted out.

“It was a lot easier 40 years ago,” said the councillor.

“We will give the residents a good delivery service, with no worries about not getting Christmas cards on time.”

The councillor thinks that the scheme could expand to other areas.
