Council celebrates wave of new features in Shropshire town centre

The new additions come after some significant investment from the council

A town centre in Shropshire has seen a wave of new features installed to give it a refreshing new look.

Telford & Wrekin Council has installed 15 new benches, 14 cycle hoops, 23 new bins, five recycling bins and 19 hanging baskets on New Street, Walker Street, Market Square, Market Approach and Church Street in Wellington.

Alongside all these new additions, the council has installed in the town centre new wayfinding signage, which includes 30 finger posts and six totems with display maps.

Councillor Paul Davis, cabinet member for strong communities, local pride and veterans, said: “We’re committed to raising standards in Wellington Town Centre and creating a place that residents, businesses and visitors can be proud of.”

He added: “These improvements are about more than enhancing the look and feel of the town centre.

“They are about creating high-quality, welcoming public spaces that encourage people to spend time in Wellington, support local businesses and help build pride in our town.”

Telford & Wrekin Council said it has invested £800,000 into Wellington town centre recently with the aim of improving the area’s landscape.

The council has also redeveloped the town’s Church Street including widening footpaths, resurfacing the carriageway, replacing all kerbs and installing new drainage, as part of its ongoing investment into roads and footpaths.

Cllr Davis said: “Wellington has a strong identity and an important future.

“These improvements form part of the wider regeneration and public realm programme, helping us to invest in the town, raise its standards and create a better place to live, work, learn, visit and socialise.”
