Conversion plan for Shropshire barn in world heritage site

Artur Fesiak has applied to turn the barn fronting Coalport High Street into a two-storey house, preserving its shape and allowing for a rear extension.

An historic industrial barn in a world heritage site could be converted into a house under new plans.

Artur Fesiak has applied to turn the barn fronting Coalport High Street into a two-storey house, preserving its shape and allowing for a rear extension.

The barn is thought to have been built sometime between 1882 and 1902.

It is in the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site and and Severn Gorge Conservation Area where development is strictly controlled.

Planners at Telford and Wrekin Council have been told that the barn is likely to have been used in association with the Coalport China Works.

It was used as a garage/workshop in the 20th century.

A heritage report from C J Richards MBE described the building as a non-designated asset that is opposite a Grade Ii listed building known as Premises.

They add that the concept of the proposed conversion has been to maintain its original form but secure a “beneficial use which will sustain its existence into the future.”

The heritage report states that the building “has become a discordant element within the residential neighbourhood of Coalport creating a negative impact on the setting of the Premises opposite, and the adjacent residential terrace.

“It is a low value industrial/workshop building which currently does not support a use which would attract investment to improve its overall appearance and well-being.

“It does however have intrinsic interest in the industrial archaeology of Coalport and its loss would be regrettable.”

Planners will be making their decision at a future date following consultation.

Details of the plans can be viewed on the council’s planning portal with the reference TWC/2026/0673
