The town's Safer Routes project, designed to benefit up to 1,000 pupils, will be officially opened on Tuesday.

During October work was completed on two raised zebra crossings on Innage Lane, and the introduction of a 20mph zone.

This followed the introduction of a raised plateau on Innage Lane in 2005, and improvements to footways in 2006 and 2007.

More than 1,000 pupils attend the three schools near Innage Lane: Bridgnorth Endowed School, St Leonard's CE Primary School and St John's RC Primary School.

The Safer Routes to School project was drawn up by a group consisting of teachers, parents and pupils from all three schools, plus county councillors and officers, and the police.

The group has encouraged more parents to "park & stride", participating in Walk to School Week, and each school has improved facilities within their site, including safer paths and cycle parking.

County councillors for the Bridgnorth area, Christian Lea and John Hurst-Knight, will be helping pupils to cut the ribbon at 9.30am on Tuesday.

Two pupils, one from St John's and one from St Leonard's, will also be presented with prizes after winning a school-wide competition to design pictures for the new 20mph zone signs.
