A thriving Shropshire pub has closed its doors after brewery bosses said they were forced to stop the licensee trading.

Lunchtime visitors were yesterday turned away from the Corbet Arms at Uffington. A spokeswoman for Punch Taverns, which runs the pub, said the decision was taken after the licensee contravened the terms of their agreement.

One visitor from Shrewsbury said: "Staff were on the pub car park turning away would-be diners and telling them of the sudden closure decision. The pub has a thriving bowling club attached, the future of which is uncertain."

But Liz Taylor, club secretary, today said they would keep going. "The brewery has told us we can continue so we are going to continue."

A spokeswoman for Punch Taverns said: "We have worked very closely with the licensee at the Corbet Arms to help them build a sustainable business and offered a range of support.

"The licensee has contravened the terms of their agreement with Punch on a number of occasions leaving us no alternative but to take further action.

"We are currently in the process of recruiting of a new licensee. "

Nobody from the Corbet Arms was available for comment today.
