Kenny Jackett hints at new deals for Wolves duo

Wolves boss Kenny Jackett today gave the biggest hint that Richard Stearman and Dave Edwards will be part of his Premier League promotion push when he challenged them to be the new 'mentors'.

Although he barely played in the last two seasons, the departure of George Elokobi has left a sizeable gap in the Molineux dressing room. While the popular Elokobi has been released, Stearman and Edwards are the only senior players out of contract next month.

Both have performed consistently this season and head coach Jackett wants to keep both.

The Molineux chief believes they can fill the gap left by the larger-than-life Cameroon-born defender by setting a similar example.

"Quite often when you move senior players out, there becomes a space for someone else," said Jackett.

"At 26, Richard Stearman I would suggest knows enough. He's been here through good times and bad times, but he's generally a good player.

"And in a position where you do need to lead – centre-back – it's a big position.

"So as senior players go, the older ones need to assume the responsibility and that does happen.

"Dave Edwards is a similar age and has played in good and bad Wolves teams in various divisions and has a lot of experience.

"He's a very good professional and is very good around the place, and all of these are generally very well thought of as people.

"Now as they develop they have to stand up and be counted and lead the club."

Jackett believes homegrown pair Carl Ikeme and vice-captain Danny Batth – who is only 23 – are also ready to assume a leadership role.

"I'd suggest Carl Ikeme at 27, there's a space now," said the boss.

"Carl was understudy to Wayne Hennessey for quite a long time and it's now his shirt and this is his club, and Stearman the same.

"Danny Batth is a little bit younger but, as senior professionals move out there's space for someone's personality to develop.

"My job is to make sure it's the right personality and that it does develop in the correct way.

"But there are opportunities for that group and I'd suggest Sam Ricketts already assumes it, but the goalkeeper and two centre-backs need to be leaders."
