Shrewsbury Town are in talks to sign former Wolves full-back Kevin Foley.

Manager Micky Mellon confirmed discussions are under way to make the 31-year-old the latest free agent signing.

Foley has been training with Town for two weeks and was the un-named trialist who played in a reserve game for them last week away to Burton Albion.

Asked if he had made an offer, Mellon said: "We've spoken to him and we're keen to bring him in, so it's at that stage at the minute.

"He's a great lad and he'll be training again here tomorrow and we'll see how it develops.

"I had a conversation with the chairman on Saturday night and I believe we're in a position now as a football club whereby if players come up of minimum League One standard, we've got to do everything we can to bring them in.

"When lads come into our recruitment pool like that, we must try really hard to sign them.

"He's played at international level, he's played in the Premier League. I know how good he is and I think that's the best way for us at the minute."

Foley arrived initially just to train as a favour through chief executive Matt Williams, who has kept in touch with him since the player's brief first loan spell at Blackpool.

But Mellon feels the chance to sign the former Republic of Ireland international, who made 213 appearances for Wolves,15 is too good to turn down.

And following the arrivals of fellow experienced free agents Ian Black, Zak Whitbread and Anthony Gerrard, he hinted at a change of transfer policy to go for tried and trusted operators.

"This isn't a criticism but it's a fact and the Shrewsbury of old wouldn't have done this – we must get the deals that are 'no-brainers' in," said the boss.
