Micky Mellon tells Town to keep fighting

Boss Micky Mellon urged Shrewsbury Town to continue their fighting spirit after returning to winning ways with a 2-0 victory against Bury.

Sullay Kaikai (28) and Abu Ogogo (73) scored the goals that gave Town a much-needed win after six defeats in eight games had sent Salop to 18th in League One.

Manager Mellon was pleased with the determination his side showed, adding: "The important thing is we carry on that spirit that we've had.

"It's important now we carry it on going forwards in the games we're going to take part.

"We were delighted with the performance and the fighting spirit against definitely the best team that's been here this season. We know we had to be very competitive and get a lot of stuff right."

Ogogo was a clear man of the match, setting up Kaikai for the opener with a simple pass then scoring an outrageous angled 25-yard volley that flew into the top corner.

Mellon believes his spirit typified what he wants from his team, adding: "Abu Ogogo has played very well since he's been here and I'm so pleased for him.

"He's come up a level after being at Dagenham and Redbridge and he gives nothing less than 100 per cent.

"He was massive for us and everything that was bouncing around in midfield, he was onto it - he would have even tackled with his head!

"But that's the spirit I want to see throughout the whole team and he scored an absolutely fantastic goal at the right time for us.

"It kept that momentum going, it got the crowd up and the players had something to fight for."

Mellon, who handed a home debut to Zak Whitbread and a bow to Anthony Gerrard, started with a 3-4-3 formation.

But, before their first goal, he changed to a flat back four and a diamond in midfield which worked better.

He said: "We started with a shape that wasn't working for us so we had to change that, and we started to get more of a foothold in the game.

"Then as the game went on, we got to know the jobs we needed to do and had to do very well.

"So I was proud of the boys and delighted for the club because we've had a tough time lately.

"We've been trying to find our feet but we showed we'll continue to fight and represent this club properly.

"I thought the support we got was absolutely fantastic and greatly needed. So a big thank you to them."

Kaikai's third goal for Salop came before he was forced off at half-time with an upper leg injury.

The goal stunted what had been a bright start by Bury, who arrived as the division's second-best away side - having lost just once in 17 trips - and with the most away goals.

Mellon said: "It was a quick start from a team that's been riding high but we got ourselves back into the game with a very good goal.

"We'll look into the injury over the next 24 hours but he took a bang to his glute I think. But he's only a young lad and he'll recover very quickly."
