Shrewsbury Town boss Graham Turner was today set to sign a new defender on loan.

The Greenhous Meadow manager is hoping to complete the signing of an as yet un-named full-back within hours.

Turner said: "We should, over the course of the working day, take a loan player. It's a full-back and that should be tied up, I would hope, over the next few hours."

The Town boss has been on the lookout for defensive reinforcements in recent weeks to bolster his squad, ahead of the start of the League One season on August 3.

Turner was trialing Newcastle full-back James Tavernier, but wouldn't be drawn on the identity of his target.

The manager has not ruled out making further additions before the weekend when his team will play Manchester City's under-21 development squad at home.

Turner had been in talks with "one of the biggest clubs in the country" in a bid to bring in a striker, but a deal has yet to be completed.

He said: "I have just spoken to one of the biggest clubs in the country about a striker and, right at this moment, they can't afford to let him out.

"They are short of players for their development squad."
