Promising young defender Connor Goldson has vowed to hit the ground running in pre-season as he aims to make his Shrewsbury Town breakthrough.
The 19-year-old has four first-team starts – including last season's memorable Carling Cup trip to Arsenal – and five substitute appearances to his name.
A niggling back injury due to growing pains hindered Goldson's progress in the middle of last season and meant he was a spectator as Shrewsbury earned promotion to League One.
Shrewsbury Town summer ins and outs
The departures of last season's first- choice centre-half pairing Ian Sharps and Shane Cansdell-Sherriff has once again opened up the race for defensive berths. Part of that void has been filled by the arrival of former Aldershot club captain Darren Jones.
But Goldson is hoping a strong build-up to the campaign can put him in contention for a starting berth.
"I've worked hard during the off-season, playing some five-a-side and doing a lot of work in the gym so I'm in good shape when we get back for pre-season (on July 5)," he said.
"I haven't started too many games so far and that's something I want to do more of this season.
"I need a good pre-season and hopefully I can get a chance. Then it's up to me to take it."
