Wing wizard Mark Wright has vowed to silence his Shrewsbury Town critics - by continuing to bang in the goals.

Wright has attracted criticism from some Shrewsbury supporters despite scoring 22 times in just 82 appearances for the club – including eight this season.

His latest came in Saturday's 2-0 win over Gillingham, a goal the left-winger celebrated by cupping an ear to the boo-boys.

The 29-year-old was the subject of much terrace abuse during a miserable spell at Bristol Rovers but insists he is happy at the Greenhous Meadow.

"I know you can't please every fan, no matter how hard you try," said Wright.

"My celebration was just a kind of banter, really – I'd just scored a goal and it was just my way of saying I'd shut them up.

"It's just something that happens in football sometimes and you have to get on with it, I don't see it as a big thing.

"I know most of the Shrewsbury fans are behind me," he added.

"I get Tweets off them after every game, especially if I've scored, and I get plenty of support here – it's nothing like it was at Bristol Rovers.

"I'm still very happy here and I've got another year on my contract after this season – the main aim for me and the team is to get promotion."

Boss Graham Turner is certainly in no doubt as to the quality of the Wolverhampton-born wide man.

"He gets chances almost every game," said the Town chief. "He's got that knack of getting in the right position at the right time.

"For a wide player to have the sort of scoring record he does is outstanding.

"We all picked up on the criticism he was getting from some fans on Saturday.

"He obviously makes one or two mistakes, as we all do, but nobody could ever question his attitude and work ethic.

"His quality from his crossing and his finishing has contributed a lot to last season's play-off team and what's happening this season."
