No letting up from rampant Telford Tigers

Telford Tigers head coach Tom Watkins will seek further improvements from his side despite watching them rack up 18 goals in two victories.

An 11-3 win at Bracknell Bess on Saturday was followed by a 7-4 success at home to Milton Keynes Lightning just 24 hours later.

With that, Tigers made a return to the upper reaches of the English Premier League.

Telford are, in fact, the joint-highest goalscorers in the league, following a weekend that saw the return of key British players Scott McKenzie and Joe Miller from one-game suspensions.

And with McKenzie and Miller having snatched four and three goals respectively this weekend, Watkins is keen to see his side continue that upward trend.

He said: "The whole weekend have been great for us. We showed a lot of good skills in Bracknell on Saturday and then against Milton Keynes at home.

"There are some areas that I think we can improve on, and you will always see things in a game that need to be done better. Despite that, it has been a very good weekend."

Saturday night's victory in Berkshire came courtesy of goals from McKenzie (3), Miller (2), Max Birbraer (2), Peter Szabo, Jason Silverthorn, Dan Davies and Sam Zajac.

Watkins added: "Having the experience back in the team against Bracknell was great and we had the fluid combination of three solid lines, all thinking on the same page.

"That isn't to say the guys didn't work hard against Swindon in midweek, but it was superb to get a couple of quick goals at the start. That set the tone for a really good performance."

Sunday saw the goals spread more evenly across the team, with Peter Szabo, Sam Zajac, Rupert Quiney, Miller, McKenzie, Jonathan Weaver and Jason Silverthorn on the scoresheet.

Watkins said: "It was good that after going behind early on, we were able to come back and take the impetus out of Milton Keynes's game.

"I was pretty pleased with most of the game, but I don't think we played particularly well in the first first period. The fact that we went into the first break 3-1 up is a big credit to our players.

"We put the puck into all the right areas and got some really good bounces in front of goal."

The Tigers are now one of six teams leading the EPL standings on nine points, with only Basingstoke Bison standing out at the top, after playing less games.

Watkins will be looking to close that deficit next weekend, when they travel to play Guildford Flames on Saturday, before the visit of Swindon Wildcats on Sunday.
