Revitalised AFC Telford United host Darlington tomorrow with boss Andy Sinton using the financially-stricken Quakers as a sobering model of life at this level.

The Bucks chief has long called for a dose of realism from certain sections of the supporters during the course of a difficult first season back in the top flight of non-league football.

And Sinton points to Darlington, who are without a win in their last 14 games, as an example of what can happen if you spend beyond your means.

"We have had to be prudent and we have had to be careful," said Sinton. "It would have been very easy for the chairman and the board to get carried away at the start of the season and give me too much money to spend and we would have been a Darlington or a Kettering, without a doubt.

"That's why I get a little bit frustrated with the reaction we get sometimes because I am sure we would rather be in our position than Darlington's.

"There are far bigger teams than us treble and quadruple outspending us and there are far bigger clubs than us in a bit of trouble because of the way they have spent.

"We're in a fight in terms of league position and not out of the woods yet but the club is stable and that is really important because if it is not stable then we can't progress."

Meanwhile, Sinton is wary of the threat posed by a Darlington side 11 points behind the Bucks in 22nd.

"We had Darlington watched on Tuesday and we will give them ultimate respect," said Sinton.

"I wouldn't say we were safe if we win."
