Former Wolves midfielder Alex Rae today said he would be open to talks about the vacant manager's job at Shrewsbury Town.

The 44-year-old, who spent nearly three years at Molineux in his playing days, had been working as an assistant to Paul Ince at Blackpool until last month.

But his stay at Bloomfield Road ended when he, fellow assistant Steve Thompson and Ince were all shown the door following a poor run of results that saw the Seasiders slide down the Championship table.

Asked if he had any interest in the Greenhous Meadow vacancy, Rae said he would be open to talks if the club were interested in speaking to him.

He said: "If there was an interest then I'd been keen to speak to them."

Rae is just one of several names to have been linked with the job since Graham Turner resigned from the post.

Town chairman Roland Wycherley confirmed last week the club had been contacted by more than 50 managers and agents.

Former Doncaster Rovers chief Sean O'Driscoll and current caretaker boss Mike Jackson, who has been handed the reins for an initial run of five matches, are the favourites with the bookmakers.

Ex-Middlesbrough No.2 Mark Venus, former Wolves manager Dean Saunders and retired Liverpool forward Robbie Fowler are also among several other names to have been linked with the job.

Rae played more than 100 competitive matches for Wolves, helping to lead the club to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2003 with victory over Sheffield United at the Millennium Stadium.

He also played for Sunderland, Falkirk, Millwall, Glasgow Rangers, Dundee and Milton Keynes Dons.

His managerial career includes a two-year spell in charge of Dundee between 2006-2008, as well as roles at MK Dons, where he was first-team coach, and then at Notts County where he was assistant boss.
