Manchester United this afternoon confirmed that David Moyes would be their new manager and will join at the end of the season.

The 50-year-old has signed a six-year-contract with the Old Trafford outfit.

Moyes said: "It's a great honour to be asked to be the next manager of Manchester United.

"I am delighted that Sir Alex saw fit to recommend me for the job. I have great respect for everything he has done for the football club.

"I know how hard it will be to follow the best manager ever, but the opportunity to manage Manchester United isn't something that comes around very often and I'm really looking forward to taking up the post next season."

Former players and coaches at the Shrews paid tribute to Moyes and revealed he was always destined to move on to great things in the game.

As the Scot continued talks with Manchester United ahead of him signing a contract, former Shrewsbury Town and Telford United manager Jake King recalled helping him launch his coaching career during his playing days at the Gay Meadow.

He said: "David was a no-nonsense centre-half who headed the ball out. He always gave 110 per cent.

"But I also remember that he was always interested in his coaching and was very serious about that side of the game."

Yesterday, Sir Alex Ferguson, 71, revealed his decision to step down after nearly 27 years in charge at Old Trafford.

Fellow Scot Moyes, in charge at Everton since 2002, held talks with Toffees chairman Bill Kenwright last night and his appointment has been confirmed today.

Mr Kenwright said: "At the end of the day, David's contract is up in six weeks and he has a right to make his own decisions.

"He has served this club wonderfully well."
