Shrewsbury Town boss Graham Turner has swooped for his second summer signing snapping up Watford left-back Matt Sadler on a six-month loan deal.

The 25-year-old began his career at Birmingham City, making more than 50 appearances for the Blues before joining Watford in a £750,000 deal back in January 2008.

His progress has stalled at Vicarage Road and he spent the second half of last season on loan at Stockport County, but Turner believes he has pulled off a real coup by persuading the player to drop into League Two.

He will stay at the Greenhous Meadow until January, his arrival following hot on the heels of centre-back Ian Sharps, who has already joined from Rotherham United.

"Matt went to Watford for big money but it's not worked out too well for him recently and he wants the opportunity to get some games in," Turner revealed.

"He didn't really want to drop into this division, but he was impressed by what he saw here when he came to talk to us.

"I'm always looking for players who give the impression that they really want to be here rather than the mercenary type who just look at where the most money is and Matt fits the bill.

"He likes what he saw here and he likes what he heard, so he's decided he will drop into this division for this club."

Sadler will compete with Shane Cansdell-Sherriff for a place on the left side of Town's defence, though both men can also play in the centre as well.

"We have several players in our squad who can play in different positions and that is important," added Turner.

Meanwhile, the Town chief refused to comment on speculation coming out of Peterborough that Shrewsbury are going head-to-head with Hereford for Posh midfielder Midfielder Toumani Diagouraga.

The 23-year-old had a previous spell under Turner at Edgar Street and sources at the Cambridgeshire club claim the two could link up again.
