Representatives of Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs appeared at London's Chancery Division of the High Court of Justice to present a petition to wind up The Wheatsheaf public house on High Street. The pub is owned by Martson's brewery.

A petition to wind up the company was presented on April 30 by the commissioners for Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs of Bush House, Strand, London who claim to be creditors of the company.

Anyone wanting more information should contact HM Revenue and Customs, solicitor's office, South West Wing, Bush House, Strand, London, WC2B 4RD, or call 0207 438 6884.

The inn was first recorded as a public house in 1780 and has always been known as either the Wheatsheaf or the Old Wheatsheaf.

The building dates back to the 17th century. Until recently it has been clad in a mock Victorian timber-frame, which was removed when the inn was completely renovated in 2003.

The landlord of The Wheatsheaf, James Calder, was unavailable for comment.

A spokesman for Marston's, which owns the pub, said: "We want to clarfy that Marstons owns the pub but leases it out. The pub will remain open."
