53 homes planned for former Telford school site

Plans have been put forward for 53 new homes on the site of a former Telford school.

The two and three bedroom-homes are set to be built under Telford & Wrekin Council's NuPlace scheme, where it acts as a private landlord to tenants at various locations across the borough.

The new development is proposed for the site of Madeley Court School, with a new access put in from the town's Court Street.

The plans will be decided by members of the council's planning committee at its meeting next Wednesday.

In a report, planning officer Steven Drury said: "The proposal involves the redevelopment of a previously developed site. The site is located in a highly sustainable location within walking distance of Madeley district centre with good connectivity to local footpath and cycleway networks."

The plans have been supported by Madeley Town Council, with conditions for adequate links put in place for walkers to get onto the Silkin Way and local walking routes. It has also called for a contribution to a new play area, as there is none earmarked for the site.

The plans have received seven comments from members of the public, two in objection. Despite the loss of playing fields on the site, Sport England has said it is happy that adequate replacements have been provided at Abraham Darby Academy and the new Madeley Academy which replaced the old Madeley Court School.

The homes will be the latest to be built after Telford & Wrekin Council launched a private firm – Nuplace – to manage the building of more than 400 private rental homes in the borough on brownfield sites, including those in Madeley and more in Randlay, Hadley and Dawley.

Earlier this year it was revealed that plans had also been put forward for a new retail development on the site, which could see store giants Lidl, Subway and Poundworld moving in.

It would be the second phase of development on the site, which already has Aldi and KFC on it. The plans also include a 202-space car park.
