Jeremy Corbyn rally cancelled in Telford

Labour party activists are still planning to meet in a Telford park despite Jeremy Corbyn pulling out of a party rally at the same venue this week.

The Labour leader, currently locked in a battle with Owen Smith to hold on to his role, had been due to speak at Hartshill Park in Oakengates on Wednesday.

Party members were told on Friday last week Mr Corbyn was now unable to attend.

The official reason for his withdrawal has not been made public, with some speculating it is down to illness while others say it is down to a diary clash with other appointments.

A post on the "Jeremy for Labour Telford" Facebook page said: "We are so sorry the Jeremy Corbyn rally has been cancelled. It was not in our control. We will try to rearrange. We are going to meet informally in the public park, same time, same place, for a picnic and solidarity.

"So if you feel like joining in the fun, meet Corbyn supporters, come along."

The informal rally, which will take place on Wednesday, from 11am to 2pm, is open to everyone.
