Syrian refugee crisis: Families settle in Shropshire

Five Syrian families have settled in Shropshire and another five are on their way.

The families are the first to arrive in the county after a task group was set up by Shropshire Council last September to respond to the ongoing international refugee crisis.

They are being accepted as part of government policy to help refugees currently settled in temporary camps near the Syrian border.

National charity Refugee Action is working closely with Shropshire's Syrian Refugee Cross-Party working group to help the new arrivals settle into their new homes in Oswestry and Shrewsbury.

Councillor Malcolm Price, chairman of Shropshire's Syrian Refugee Cross-Party Working said: "I am really pleased the first five families have arrived and are being supported and resettled quickly into their local communities.

"These families are among some of the most vulnerable displaced Syrians identified by the UN which is working alongside the Home Office. Our working group and local communities will continue to work closely with the family as they embark on their new life in Shropshire."

Shropshire's Syrian Refugee Cross Party working group has said it will continue to liaise with the Home Office to make arrangements to accept a further five families in due course.

In February, Telford agreed to welcome 10 Syrian refugees this year as part of the Government scheme to allow 20,000 people fleeing the country's civil war into Britain.
