A body was found by rescuers looking for a 30-year-old French tourist missing on the mountain. The rescuers were themselves winched of the mountain as the remnants of one of the Caribbean hurricanes swept in.

The body was discovered with the help of search and rescue dogs after an extensive 12-hour search and rescue operation. It has not been formally identified.

Aberdyfi Search & Rescue team call-handlers was contacted on Wednesday by North Wales Police. The alarm was raised by staff at the hotel who said the man failed to return to his hotel in Bala on Sunday.

His car was discovered in Minffordd car-park, a popular trail-head for Cader Idris.

"Assistance was sought from the Coastguard helicopter, R936, from our neighbouring team South Snowdonia Search & Rescue and from Search and Rescue Dogs Wales," Graham O'Hanlon from the search and rescue team said.

He said after a long and inconclusive search, Izzy, a trailing-dog trained to pick up the specific scent of a missing person, indicated that he had found scent, giving the first good evidence that someone was on the mountain, and an indication which path he had taken.

The search area was narrowed and the helicopter crew spotted a body on a craggy ground above Llyn Cau.

"It was discovered that the man had not survived his ordeal. With the weather closing-in fast the body was winched into R936 and lifted down off the mountain. The helicopter then returned to lift the stretcher-party off the crag."

Graham O'Hanlon part of the rescue team said: "Our sympathies go out to the friends and family of this man who lost his life."
