Swan Hill House Residential Home, which looks after adults aged 65 and over, was visited in August by Care Quality Commission inspectors.

In their report, which has just been published, the inspectors found that the home, which can look after 28 residents, offered a safe and secure environment.

The report said: "People felt safe living at the home as staff were always available to support them when needed. Staff had received training on how to keep people safe and knew how to recognise the different signs of abuse. They knew how to protect people from further harm and who to report concerns to."

The home was also praised for how it dealt with the administering of medicines. The report said: "People received support to take their medicine when needed and accurate records were maintained. Staff monitored people's health and arranged health care appointments as and when required.

"People were confident staff had the skills and knowledge to meet their individual needs and staff felt well supported and received training that was relevant to their role and to further their development.

"Staff provided information to people in a way they could understand to enable them to make informed decisions about their care and treatment. Where people were unable to make certain decisions for themselves there had to be made in their best interest by people who knew them well." The quality and choice of food on offer was also commended.

In summing up the report concluded: "Staff treated people with kindness and compassion. People were offered choice and felt listened to. Staff promoted people's dignity and independence. Staff spoke with and about people with respect."There was an open and honest culture at the home where people and staff were encouraged, and felt comfortable, to express their views. People felt able to talk to staff or management if they had any concerns or complaints and were confident these would be dealt with promptly."

Melanie Yorke, care administration manager at the home, said: "We are absolutely delighted with the report. We are extremely proud of the team and the hard work that they do every day. It is lovely to have that recognition. It was a lovely report and we are very proud of what we do here at the home. We have got very high standards and it was great to be recognised for that."
