The crash, which involved a blue Audi A3 and a black Land Rover Discovery, happened at around 2pm on Wednesday on the A458 between Cressage and Cound.

Ambulance crews and the fire service were sent to the location but were unable to save the driver of the Audi, who was confirmed dead at the scene.

Three ambulances and two Midlands Air Ambulances from Cosford and Stafford had attended the crash, where the 4x4 was found on its roof.

A 62-year-old woman who had been a front seat passenger in the car was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with what was described as "rib and pelvic pain".

A 76-year-old man, who was the only person in the 4x4 had suffered head and facial injuries and was also taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for treatment.

Murray MacGregor of West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "On arrival crews found a car and a 4x4 vehicle that had suffered severe damage. The 4x4 was on its roof.

"Tragically, it was not possible to save the life of the driver of the car, a man, and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

"A 62-year-old woman who was the front seat passenger was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital by land ambulance with rib and pelvic pain.

"The 76-year-old man, who was the only occupant of the 4x4, was initially said to have been unconscious. He had suffered head and facial injuries. He too was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital by land ambulance."

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service had attended the crash and used cutting equipment to free two people trapped, while another person was said to have been thrown from their vehicle.

Police put in road closures as a result of the crash, sealing off the highway from the B4380 junction in Cressage to the Weeping Cross Island in Uffington.

A number of vehicles are thought to have been in the immediate area close to the time of collision and officers urge people to call police on 101, quoting incident number 338s of January 4 if you have any information.
