Bridgnorth High Street was blocked after the lorry became wedged, coming from Listley Street and attempting to turn onto one-way road Postern Gate.

The lorry had a Slovakian number plate.

As it was trying to move, it clipped a chunk of the brickwork from the HSBC bank building.

The lorry also came narrowly close to hitting Alley Katz toy shop, on Postern Gate.

Sophia Manning, who was working in the shop when the drama happened yesterday at about 2.30pm said: "It was stuck for about an hour and a half, it was right up against the building. It was a bit scary."

Staff working in neighbouring Costa coffee shop, also on Postern Gate, said it had no customers for two hours because shoppers were unable to access it as the lorry took up the whole road.

Sam Cowdell, from Costa, said: "A guy from Gills off-licence tried to tell the driver it was a one-way but he didn't listen and he had to go all around the block and pick the trailer up again."

Bobby Gill, manager of Gills off-licence on Listley Street, said: "Normally single lorries struggle – and he had a lorry and a trailer. We told him to turn back and reverse in the car park and he said he didn't understand.

"We tried to gesture and he didn't listen and he got stuck for hours. We tried to help him then."

Shopper Adrian Casey, from Jubilee Court, Bridgnorth, added: "It was chaos".
