Emergency services were called to the crash at about 7.25am on Sunday morning on the busy road near the Queens Head.

An elderly couple, both aged in their 70s, and were travelling in a blue Subaru Legacy and had to be flown by air ambulance to Royal Stoke University Hospital with serious internal injuries, which were described as "life changing".

Today the man's injuries are described as "significant and life threatening" and the woman is described as stable but her injuries are still described as "life threatening".

The driver of a silver Volkswagen Jetta, a man in his 40s, sustained head and hand injuries and was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital by ambulance.

West Mercia Police say the Subaru was travelling north along the A5 towards Oswestry when it was involved in the collision with the Volkswagen travelling south in the direction of Shrewsbury, close to Oswestry Golf Club.

The collision caused the A5 to be closed in both directions between the B4397 at Shotatton and the Mile End Roundabout.

The road remained closed late into the afternoon because damage caused by the accident meant that part of the carriageway had to be resurfaced.

Officers would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or anybody who may have seen either car shortly before the collision.

If you have any information call West Mercia Police on 101 quoting incident number 166s of October 9.
